James Davis, 1780-1861, was born in the Core Sound area of Carteret County. He was the eldest son of Joseph Wicker Davis who owned Davis Island.

In his lifetime, James, a skilled carpenter, built many homes in Beaufort - several for himself, his children and others.

In the early 19th century he witnessed a small village of only 70-something houses and 600-700 inhabitants.

When he built this home on Moore Street in 1829, the town was already 120 years old, but very isolated with little or no amenities - there were no paved streets, no shell road, but only a wilderness of scrubby bushes under the live oak and yaupon trees. Pigs, cows and horses roamed the streets..

James was a brick mason at Fort Macon when it was built - 1826-1834.

By 1855 he witnessed mail no longer coming by horseback, but by stage three times a week.

In 1858 the train finally came to Morehead City but visitors still had to catch a boat over to Beaufort.

James Davis died the year the Civil War began. He didn't live to see the streets paved or the train come to town, but he left a mark - a legacy of wonderfully constructed homes that have weathered storms for almost 200 years - and still stand strong today.
